Amazon.com Review

Brother's CTS-400-CH four-line cordless handset offers a wealth of features that make it ideal for small-office workers who require mobility within their work environment. Designed to operate with the Quattro CTS 400 base unit (model CTS-400-DU), the 900 MHz cordless handset provides all the options you'd expect to find in a corded unit.

If you plan on using more than one handset for the Quattro system, you'll need to assign each handset a two-digit identification number to avoid potential interference on the system. An LCD display informs you which lines are available, ringing, in use, or on hold. To make an outside call, you simply press a line button, then dial the number.

The display also logs the time of a call, though it doesn't display the date and time. The unit also features a caller ID display with a 40-number call log (you'll need to purchase the optional Caller ID server to access this feature).

The 10-number speed dialing is blissfully easy to set up; simply press Mem, enter a number from zero through nine, dial the phone number, and press Mem again. You can also store pauses and flashes within the speed-dial memory.

Like its corded brethren, the CTS-400-CH cordless unit allows you to make intercom calls to other lines on the Quattro system, as well as the ability to hold three-way conferences.

The unit itself is well designed. The buttons are responsive and unobtrusive, and at 8.9 ounces with the battery installed, the handset is hefty without feeling bulky. The reception, of course, isn't as strong as a corded phone, but it's better than a lot of other cordless phones available. One oddity we noted during testing was that the manual said the battery should take about two and a half hours to charge while it's in the handset; however, our battery had not fully charged even after about five hours. Because this system's design lets you place the ni-cad battery directly in the charger, we moved it there, and a full charge took only about an hour.

If your small office environment requires a certain amount of mobility from your employees, the Brother CTS-400-CH cordless handset will not disappoint. -- John Frederick Moore

4.0 out of 5 stars Brother Quattro phone system, June 21, 2000

A feature packed product with few disadvantages. Works well, is easy to set up and use. Range of the 900MHz cordless indoors is a little disappointing, and a 2.4GHz version would be nice. Build quality is not the best, but is commensurate with the important part, i.e. the price! The starter kit is particularly good value, but while it is capable of expansion to 12 extensions, it becomes pretty expensive to do that, although one has to bear in mind that it is a 4-line device! The addition of a headset of better quality than the "free $20 value" one that comes with the kit would be a nice touch. All in all, as a good 4-line system for a small premises, I can wholeheartedly recommend it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very good except the range is terrible, September 29, 2000
David Sharnoff (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brother CTS-400-CH 900 MHz Digital 4-Line Cordless Handset and Charger with Caller ID (Office Product)
This phone is almost perfect. It has all the features you might want, is easy to use, priced reasonably. Unfortunantly, it has the smallest range of any cordless phone I've ever tried. Even 15 feet from the base station my reception isn't perfect. At 75 feet it is unusable. Two caveats: I haven't checked the manual to see if there is a magic incantation that's required to get it to work properly. I have only played with two base stations and three handsets so I may have just had bad luck.
