A 2.4 GHz analog cordless phone from Phonemate, the PMP-3850 comes with a number of useful features, including caller ID/call waiting capability. The PMP-3850 can store up to 40 numbers in its caller ID memory, while the speed dial feature lets you quickly dial one of 20 preset numbers. An auto-scan feature automatically detects the best channel available, and handset controls allow you to easily adjust the phone's volume settings to your liking.
A page button on the base makes finding a lost handset quick and painless, while the menu-driven handset LCD lets you access the phones features in either French, English, or Spanish. A dual keypad lets you dial from either the base or handset, and a mute button lets you mute your end of the conversation without dropping the call. A redial button lets you easily call the last outgoing number, while both tone and pulse dialing modes are provided in case you need to switch to one or the other.
The PMP-3850 is headset compatible (a belt clip is provided for hands-free operation) and is wall-mountable, saving on valuable counter space. A voicemail message indicator lets you know when you have messages waiting, while a low battery indicator lets you know when to return the phone to its base for recharging. The NiMH battery has a talk time of up to five hours, with a standby battery life of up to five days. Wall mountable, the PMP-3850 also comes with both a handset and base speakerphone. The PMP-3850 is backed with a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.

I purchased this phone recently at a retail store.
The setup was simple, the directions were clear, and the design is sleek and comfortable.
However, the phone itself is horrible. While people can hear you just fine, you cannot hear them. I thought it was interference but I moved both the unit and the phone all over the house.
When I went to return it, the clerk commented that they receive about two dozen returns on this phone PER WEEK.
Too bad because it has everything I want!

I was very surprised at the preceding 5 adverse reviews--I believe they were accurate for those owners, but I, for at least one, didn't have any trouble with the PMP-3860BK. I've had it for a good 5 or 6 years, using it intermittently at work. It's been fine by handset OR speakerphone, with basic handset or with headset plugged into the jack. I didn't use most of the advanced features, but what I did use was fine.
This is old technology so it can't compete with 5.8GHz but for me the range (down the hall, around the corner, through a few walls) was fine. Clarity has been good on both ends.
At this point I'd prefer simplifying by buying a multi-handset/expandable system, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy this as a cheap extra portable. As of 5/2009, you shouldn't have to pay more than $10-15, as it's pretty long in the tooth.

I can't believe I was suckered into buying this piece of worthless junk. I returned it to the store, they gave me a new one, and within one week I had the same problems. The only feature that works is the speaker phone - forget the handset!! I have tried to contact the manufacturer for a refund, also to no avail. Beauty is only skin deep!!
