Toshiba SG1000BK 2.4 GHz Caller ID Cordless Phone

The handset features a three-line backlit LCD for caller ID services and other operations. To use the LCD, we pressed the function button to access the menu. We used the arrow keys to scroll through the options and then pressed Select to choose a function. When a call comes in, the handset will display caller information including name, number, time of call, and total number of calls received. A displayed number can either be dialed or stored in the speed-dial memory. We found the keypad intuitive and the LCD easy to read. (A quick guide is also included with the handset for convenient reference to all basic phone operations.) A separate caller ID button allows you to see the total number of calls you have stored in caller ID log at any time. You can save up to 50 names and numbers.

You can store up to 10 numbers in speed-dial memory. To call a saved number, press the memory button and scroll through the LCD menu to find the number. Or, for two-touch dialing, just press memory button and the assigned speed-dial number.

The Toshiba SG1000 has an impressive static-free range. In our tests, we were able to take the phone 500 feet from the base before detecting any interference. We were able to hold a conversation for up to 1,000 feet from the base. We did notice a slight background humming even at close range, but it wasn't enough to be distracting. We were also able to take the phone behind walls and near other electronic equipment with minimal interference.

Other features include a handset locator button, redial, and adjustable volume and ringer controls. This phone is compatible with hearing aids. There is also a spare-battery compartment, which also functions as a backup during a power failure, in the base unit. --Emily Bakko

The SG1000 automatically selects the clearest of 20 channels to avoid the temporary interference that often occurs in densely populated areas. It features a dual battery charging and power-failure back-up system. Under normal use the handset battery lasts for up to seven days. The helical antenna is strong and small, so it won't break or get in the way when talking on the handset.
