The Toshiba SG1700 uses the higher-frequency 2.4 GHz range of the FM radio spectrum, opened to cordless phones only in 1998. The shorter wavelengths used at this range means the phone's transmitter/receiver encounters less interference. The 2.4 GHz range is also far above the range accessible to most scanners, so there's less risk of eavesdropping. Toshiba's Call Protect scrambling ensures your privacy.
When you add digital spread-spectrum technology to a 2.4 GHz cordless, you get the best security and clarity currently available. Spread-spectrum phones switch rapidly from frequency to frequency at random, using less power and encountering less interference. The SG1700's auto-scan feature automatically switches between 30 channels in the 2.4 GHz range to find the best signal.
This phone also comes with a two-way intercom function, allowing you to talk to someone in another room using either the base or handset. The lighted keypad makes it easy to dial in dim lighting. Reverse battery charging on the base allows for either face-down or face-up charging.
Other useful phone features include a 20-number memory for frequently dialed numbers and last-number redial. It has a 2.5-millimeter jack for use with an optional headset. It is also compatible with hearing aids, and can be mounted on a desk or wall. The included belt clip allows you to carry the handset with you, hands-free, as you walk around the house. Press a button on the base to locate the handset anywhere within range.

It has a different casing, but the internal circuits are entirely the same, so the quality is identical to the 2.4 GHz Uniden phones. One word to summarize the quality of this phone--echo! It echos like crazy, reminds me the early 900 MHz DSS phones. If you want a really good phone, go for Panasonic... VTech make phones for a lot of brands, including AT&T. Heck, they owned the right to market phones under the AT&T brand. This applies to Sony and other name brands. I think the only company design and make their own phones is Panasonic. It's crystal clear with no background noise or static. My biggest complaint is the echoing. It's really annoying. Although the people you are speaking with can't hear the echo. It's key pads lights up which makes it great to use in the dark. I was using the Uniden 900 MHz digital phone before, and I just bought the Toshiba, because I needed another phone, so I was able to compare the immediate differences between the MHz and GHz. There is "indeed" a earful of difference. The GHz phone is clearer. Very clear. No noise. No hissy sounds. If you have a long face and big hands then, this particular phone may be some difficult to use, because we are so used to place our phone into our mouth. Actually if you speak away from the phone, the other side still can you you. Good price for under $ 80 phone, that's 2.4 GHz. Other brands, especially, Panasonic is too much! If you feel the phone, its quality if much better than GE, Uniden, or Vtec. From a Happy customer. |
